Journal of Energy in Southern Africa • Vol 19 No 3 • August 2008 Abstract Worldwide attempts are being made to increase the use of our renewable energy sources as well as to use our current fossil fuel energy sources more efficiently. Waste heat recovery forms a substantial part of the latter and is the focus of this project. Stirling technology finds application in both the renewable energy sector and in waste heat recovery. Investigating the applicability of Stirling engines in the above-mentioned fields is relevant to develop more efficient external combustion units as well as to utilize our renewable energy sources. Developing a design analysis and synthesis tool capable of optimizing Stirling powered units forms the main objective of this project. The methodology followed to achieve this, involved the application of three different methods of analysis, namely the method of Schmidt, the adiabatic analysis and the simple analysis based on a five volume approach. The Schmidt analysis is used to obtain the internal engine pressure which is a required input for the adiabatic analysis while the simple analysis introduces pumping losses and regenerator inefficiencies. These methodologies are discussed briefly in this paper. Experimental verification of the analytical data was carried out on a Heinrici Stirling engine and both the analytical data and the experimental data are presented here. Shortcomings of these methods of analysis are highlighted and an alternative approach to solve particular shortcomings is presented.

Multi-objective Optimization of Stirling Heat Engine Using Gray Wolf Optimization Algorithm (TECHNICAL NOTE)
The use of meta-heuristic optimization methods have become quite generic in the past two decades. This paper provides a theoretical investigation to find optimum design parameters of the Stirling heat engines using a recently presented nature-inspired method namely the gray wolf optimization (GWO). This algorithm is utilized for the maximization of the output power/thermal efficiency as well as...

Increasing energy cost and reduction of fossil fuel resources have been resulted in increasing demand of renewable energy, such as micro biomass particles in small scale Stirling engines to generate combined heat and power. In such Stirling engines, biomass particles are burnt in external combustion chamber and then, the generated heat is transferred to the working fluid of the engine cycle. Th...

This paper uses lumped parameter dynamic equations to model the mass flow, piston dynamics, and control volume behavior inside a free-piston Stirling engine. A new model for a Stirling engine thermal regenerator that incorporates a dynamically changing temperature gradient is presented. Analysis, design, fabrication, and experimental assessment of a symmetric three-phase free-piston Stirling engine system is discussed in this paper. The system is designed to operate with moderate-temperature heat input that is consistent with solar-thermal collectors. Diaphragm pistons and nylon flexures are considered for this prototype to eliminate surface friction and to provide appropriate...

This paper describes a new approach to modeling and designing free-piston Stirling engines with the goal of building a working prototype. The Stirling cycle is recast as a dynamic system where control design tools and techniques can be applied to determine optimal manufacturable parameters for the engine. A simplified state-space analysis exhibits the merits of this perspective by revealing a l...
